Ten years ago, Chinese President Xi Jinping and King Philippe of Belgium elevated the China-Belgium relationship to an all-round partnership of friendly cooperation. Since then, under the strategic guidance of both countries’ leaders, this relationship has yielded fruitful outcomes. Wu Gang, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of China in Belgium, illustrates the progress and highlights the significant achievements of this partnership.
Visionary high-level exchanges have been instrumental in shaping the path forward for the two nations. President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Belgium in 2014 marked a key milestone, culminating in the signing of the Joint Declaration on Deepening All-Round Friendly Cooperative Partnership. Subsequent high-level engagements, including King Philippe’s visit to China and Prime Minister Alexander De Croo’s recent visit, have further strengthened the bonds between China and Belgium.
Economic and trade cooperation has thrived over the past decade. Notably, China-Belgium trade has surpassed RMB 282 billion yuan, reflecting a doubling in numbers compared to ten years ago. The resumption of Belgian pork exports to China has also contributed to this upward trajectory. Both countries have identified areas such as agri-food products, logistics, biomedicine, and green development as potential avenues for extended cooperation, fostering continued growth in economic, trade, and investment ties.
Cultural and people-to-people exchanges have flourished, transcending boundaries and fostering mutual understanding. The 32 twin city/province relationships have served as vital bridges between the two nations, facilitating sub-national exchanges and cooperation. Notably, the popularity of iconic cultural landmarks and the warm reception of festive events such as Happy Chinese New Year have enriched the cultural landscape and deepened the connections between the peoples of China and Belgium.
