China Media Group (CMG), the parent company of CGTN, is set to celebrate the 2024 United Nations Chinese Language Day with an inspiring and diverse lineup at the 4th International Chinese Language Video Festival. The festival, which is taking place at the prestigious Palais des Nations, is a collaborative effort between CMG, the UN Office at Geneva, and the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the UN at Geneva, showcasing the global appeal of Chinese culture and language.
This year’s festival embraces the theme of “Youth Together for a Better World,” inviting video productions from across the globe to participate in celebrating the richness and benefits of multiculturalism through the lens of Chinese culture. Shen Haixiong, President and Editor-in-Chief of CMG, envisions the festival as a platform for friends of Chinese culture worldwide to engage in a creative and vibrant celebration of the diverse heritage and values it embodies.
The event has drawn distinguished guests, including Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of UN Geneva, and Ambassador Chen Xu, Permanent Representative of China in Geneva, who are joined by diplomats, officials, and youth representatives from international organizations. Tatiana Valovaya emphasizes the role of language as more than just a form of communication, but as a conduit for knowledge and a unifying force for humanity, reflecting the festival’s broader message of inclusivity and understanding.
The festival has received an impressive response with over 1,000 videos from 47 countries and regions competing across eight categories, with 18 awards for distinction. Notably, winners will have the opportunity to visit China this summer, experiencing the country’s rich traditions and heritage as Young Cultural Ambassadors. Additionally, the festival features captivating performances such as a Chinese folk concert and a creative Chinese Characters Show, underscoring the fusion of tradition and innovation in Chinese art and culture.
The event’s significance is further underscored by its synchronization with the “Rain of Millet,” a solar term in the traditional East Asian calendar, paying homage to the inventor of Chinese characters and embodying the strong cultural ties being celebrated at the festival. This initiative marks the fourth consecutive year that CMG Europe has spearheaded this hallmark event in collaboration with United Nations Chinese Language Day, serving as a testament to the enduring global appeal and significance of Chinese cultural heritage.
